Pet Spotlight: Spring Brings More Problems than Pollen

Spring is a busy time of year for unwanted feral cat communities and their caregivers.

Some concerned Gwinnett citizens spend their spare time capturing feral cat colonies or helping to maintain them.

But with spring comes the births of many more unwanted kittens. Most of these cats live wild and must hunt for food, and the birth of kittens puts a hardship on the mothers and makes many kittens unhealthy.

With the caring and generosity of volunteers, many of these unfortunate cats or kittens find loving homes, and therefore have a chance to live healthy happy lives.

What can be done to help this situation, is to make sure that you have your animals spayed or neutered.

According to the Mountain Park Animal Hospital this should be done around the age of 6 months, or as soon as the animals are finished with their first shots.

Many believe that it is better to wait until the female has gone through her first heat or has had her first litter. This is a myth and could lead to further problems for the pet.

“Having your animal spayed or neutered can prevent ovarian and prostate cancer,” stated one of the staff members at Mountain Park Animal Hospital.
