Special Olympics Relay Comes To Lilburn

Torch Run Relay continues at 8:30 a.m. at Lilburn City Hall and runs to the Gwinnett-DeKalb line.

The Special Olympics of Georgia’s 25th Annual Torch Relay Run will pass through Lilburn Thursday morning on its way to the annual Summer Games this weekend at Emory University.

The next leg of the relay, which began May 9 in Columbia County, takes off at 8:30 a.m. at Lilburn City Hall and runs to the Gwinnett-DeKalb County line.

Local law-enforcement officers will carry the torch from Old Town Lilburn, down Lawrenceville Highway (U.S. 29) and finish near Jimmy Carter Boulevard, passing the torch from person to person along the way.

Historically, the sheriff’s department kicks off the Special Olympic Games with the Torch Run as officers carry the Flame of Hope into the opening ceremony.

The final leg on Friday is a 6.2-mile run from the State Capitol to Emory, where an officer and an athlete will light the cauldron.

More than 2,000 athletes and coaches are expected for the Summer Games, which run through Sunday.

Athletes will compete in sports competitions such as flag football, soccer, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, and table tennis, and many others with medals awarded throughout.
