Teen 'Stars of Tomorrow' Sought

Variety of Georgia inviting teenagers to enter singing competition by submitting audition videos.

Variety Club of Georgia is looking for teenagers who sing who want to become tomorrow’s stars. Talented teens ages 13-19 from all over the state can submit audition videos through Dec. 15. The winner will earn a trip for four to Universal Studios in Hollywood, an audition for the Theatre of the Stars series in Atlanta, and other career opportunities.

“Stars of Tomorrow” is being co-chaired by Buckhead residents Carolyn Lee Wills and Mike Dangerfield, former chief barker of Variety of Georgia. The committee includes members from Atlanta, Brookhaven, Buckhead, Decatur, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Roswell, Sandy Springs, Smyrna, Vinings, and other communities. Michael Milsap of Lawrenceville is serving as music consultant for the competition and composing the theme song.

“Our Stars of Tomorrow competition is a great way for Georgia’s youth to set the stage for greatness,” said Wills and Dangerfield in announcing the contest. “These teens are doing big things in their communities, and we want to help them take the next step. The experiences they will have and the connections they will make will allow local youth to go farther, wherever their paths may lead.”

Eligible teens across Georgia can submit videos of their best performances at www.sonicbids.com/starsoftomorrow. After event coordinators approve submissions, entries will be uploaded at www.youtube.com/varietyofgeorgia.

Judges will then select 20 finalists based on their performance videos. Already on board as a celebrity judge is Steve Clements, former executive producer of Disney’s “The Mickey Mouse Club.” During his tenure with the show in 1989-91, Clements introduced Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.

These 20 singers will perform in a preliminary round of judging Jan. 8 at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta where the top 10 finalists will be announced. Stars of Tomorrow hosts the final competition before an audience at a gala event featuring the top 10 vocalists March 11 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Besides a trip to Hollywood and the Theatre of the Stars audition in Atlanta, the winner receives a professional photo shoot, a custom-made demo CD, and tickets to an upcoming performance at the Fox Theatre. The first and second runners-up each receive a Theatre of the Stars audition, a professional photo shoot, a custom-made demo CD, and Fox Theatre tickets.

Contestants must be amateur, unsigned, individual talent and have no professional experience. Contestants over 18, or legal guardians of contestants under 18, must sign a waiver before the contestant is allowed to compete. Video submissions will be reviewed to ensure they showcase singing talent without any harsh language.

Stars of Tomorrow benefits Variety of Georgia initiatives across the state. A nonprofit organization, Variety of Georgia works to improve the lives of children in need who may be challenged by physical and/or mental disabilities, poverty, abuse or neglect. Following the tradition of the first Variety fundraising event, a circus-themed affair held under a big top, clubs are often called "tents" and members "barkers.” Variety of Georgia, Tent 21 was formed in Atlanta in 1939.
