Viewfinder: 'The Nutcracker' Auditions at Lilburn School of Ballet

A local ballet company holds open auditions for extra roles in its annual production of "The Nutcracker."

held open auditions for its November production of "The Nutcracker" on Sept. 7, and nearly 70 young dancers turned out for the opportunity.

In one room, the girls --ages 6 and above -- competed against each other for part in the production as extras, such as soldiers, mice, princesses, dream fairies and more.

By next week, most should know if they landed a role or not.

"This is a unique opportunity for younger dancers to gain experience performing in a professional quality production," Jennifer Gordon, the artistic director.

Ten-year-old Hannah Deedy said she was excited about the auditions and hoped to be a dream fairy. Last year, she was a soldier. But, being a ballet dancer is more than about completing a few moves, she said.

"It's hard to explain, she said. "I like being able to dance, and knowing that I will be able to do that in the future."

Her mother, Sherry Deedy, said she likes the character that her daughter gains by being involved in ballet. Poise, grace and confidence are just some of the attributes she loves.

"I'm not necessarily looking for her to turn into a ballerina when she gets older," Deeded added. "I don't have that in my mind."

For Gordon, the process of growing young dancers and giving them chances to showcase what they are learning is pure joy.

"I love my job," she said. "I love working with kids and seeing them excel. Some kids are going to go on to be dancers. Some kids just use it in their regular lives. It's just so fulfilling."
