Bites Nearby: Five Spot Frozen Yogurt

Each week Patch picks a local restaurant worth checking out, and this week's choice is Five Spot Frozen Yogurt.

I ran into the other day, and decided to write something on the relatively new dessert location in Snellville.

Well, actually they've been around for a year, having opened on May 22, 2011. A year? It's been that long? Can't believe it.

Most of the time I avoid places like this. There's only one reason: They cater to people who can have dairy products. I can't, so I hardly see the reason for going into yogurt places. I end up only being able to eat one thing on the entire menu.

Such was the case here. Of the 16 flavors, only one -- kiwi strawberry -- was dairy free. So, that's what I had. It was actually pretty tasty.

But, for those people who eat dairy, there's a nice array of flavors, including red velvet cupcake, very strawberry, pomegranate raspberry tart, old-fashioned peanut butter, dark chocolate, fancy Frency vanilla and Saigon cinnamon, among others. According to the company's website, those 16 available flavors can change.

One of the coolest things there, though, are all the toppings. Of course, you can go the traditional route with sprinkles and cherries, but if you're a rebel like me, there are gummy worms and pretzels, and I'm pretty sure I saw cereal. In total, there are about 40 choices.

What I actually like the most about Five Spot Frozen Yogurt had nothing to do with the menu. It was the cleanliness. They get four stars for that. I didn't see lots of melted messes around left by children, or toppings all over the place, or trash on the tables or the floor. My kind of place!

In addition, I'm all about customer service, so I GREATLY appreciated how nice the staff was when I was there. I only saw two people, but they were all smiles.

Another thing I like about this yogurt shop is that they participate in helping the community. Most recently, the Snellville location donated a percentage of their proceeds to help the family of

For all the folks who love this place -- and they have more than 2,000 fans on Facebook -- a new Grayson location is opening soon in the Kroger shopping center next to the UPS Store, at Grayson Highway and Rosebud Road.

So, if you're mouth is watering for something sweet, try this place out. The yogurt is liquid-based, which keeps it from being grainy. There also are sugar free varieties. And, everything is .44 an ounce generally, except Mondays through Thursdays when nothing costs more than $5.

Even for a girl who can't eat dairy, it was worth the visit.
