Bites Nearby: Sakegura Japanese Restaurant

Every week, Patch chooses a restaurant worth checking out in the area. This week we went to Sakegura in Snellville.

I headed to the far reaches of Snellville on Thursday, thinking that I was going to the new Olive Garden for this Bites Nearby. But, it was still closed, so I decided on .

I'd never gone in there, actually because I'd never seen it before Thursday. I like Japanese food, so I decided to give it a try. And, yes, this was lunch time. (Last time I wrote one of these someone criticized me for not reviewing dinner selections. Well, sorry I didn't have dinner.)

When I walked in, the first thing the host tried to get me to do was to sit down with a young man who had come in by himself. "You don't want Hibachi?" "No," I said. "You sure? He came by himself. "No, no Hibachi," I replied. "Ohhh, OK." Maybe I was imagining it, but I think he might have been trying to make a love connection. Love, 0.

So, I sat down and ordered a number of things: beef gyozas (there were five for $5), a lunch bento box of teriyaki chicken ($8) and mudpie ($3).

The host was now my waiter, and he was super nice. In fact, everyone was. From James -- the manager -- to all the waiters/hosts, the staff was so friendly. Not only are they funny, but they honestly seem to like being there.

The Food

About the food. My overall score would be 4.8 out of 5 stars. The beef gyozas were tasty, and just the right amount for an appetizer. And, the lunch bento box was relatively inexpensive for all the food I got.

In the box, there were veggies tempura with sauce (I subbed out the shrimp for more veggies, and no one had a problem with that. Cool points.) There was the house soup (beef broth, mushroom, pasta, scallion and fried onion), white rice and the teriyaki chicken.

I really liked the chicken and rice, and the veggie tempura weren't too bad once I started dipping them in the sauce. My least favorite was the soup. I could have passed on it. Maybe it was just too bland or something for me. (I like spicy stuff.) But, the box was particularly cute, I thought.Β

When it came time to decide on the dessert. We settled on mudpie. I say "we" because James said that was one of his favorites because he likes ice cream. The dessert, basically an ice cream cake, didn't disappoint.

Facebook Foray

After I was done eating, I started fiddling with my computer, looking for the Sakegura facebook page. We -- me, the waiter and James -- spent something like 10 or 15 minutes total trying to figure out where in the heck was it.

One came up, possibly created by James' son, from what I could tell. There really wasn't much there. The other, by the same name "Sakegura Japanese Restaurant," was created by my host/waiter. For the life of him, he couldn't figure out why it wasn't coming up on Facebook. We eventually found it.

But, James said that he was going to have to talk to his son about the sparse one. "I got to cut my son's allowance," he said. "Right? He got to do something for Daddy!" Hilarity.

On my way out, I heard a few "Whohooos" coming from the Hibachi area. My could-have-been blind date was gone by then, by there were definitely people enjoying themselves.

All in all, I love this place, and will definitely come back. Maybe next time I will have dinner.
