Business Spotlight: Five Forks Antique Mall

Each week we feature a business from our hometown of Lilburn. This week, learn more about Five Forks Antique Mall.

Jim Underhill started as a dealer at Happy's Antiques in 2002. Originally opened by Mel Sanders in 1993 and then owned afterwards by Kaye Marx Gammon the store has gained quite a following. Marx Gammon passed away in July and that is when Underhill took over ownership of the store. With a few small changes in mind to the inside the only thing about the store that people may notice with the new ownership will be the name. I recently sat down with Jim to talk about the Five Forks Antique Mall.

Patch: What is the best aspect of owning an antiques store?

Jim: I enjoy it because it's always changing. It's always new and it's always different. I like talking to our customers and getting to know them and getting to know what they like and what they're looking for. You see things here that you grew up with that you may have forgotten about and you get a warm and fuzzy feeling of nostalgia.

Patch: What is the most challenging aspect of owning the Five Forks Antique Mall?

Jim: I would say that you never know what someone really needs or what they're looking for. It's frustrating sometimes if a dealer brings in something and thinks a customer is going to love it. They may love it this day but the next day they're looking for something different. So it's hard to keep up with. In order to help with this we have the wish list. We keep a book up front where our customers can write down items they are looking for so if any of the 45 dealers that are in here know of it, have seen it or have it, we can get in touch with them.

Patch: What makes Five Forks Antique Mall unique?

Jim: I think we have a really eclectic feel. It's not just all antiques. We have collectibles as well as some newer items too. We have all kinds of little unique gifty items.

Patch: What makes the Lilburn community special?

Jim: The people out here are just good ol' people that are just working hard to make their living and make ends meet and our place gives them something for less rather than some of the department stores. People know everybody and it makes the community feel close.
