Business Spotlight: Lilburn Cultural Arts Center

Each week we feature a business from our hometown of Lilburn. This week, learn more about the Lilburn Cultural Arts Center.

The Lilburn Cultural Arts Center opened its doors in May of 2011. Mechel Miller is the director of operations for the center. Miller came on board with owner Lois Chisolm to help bring a performing arts enrichment program to the area. The center offers classes to the community including gardening, fitness, drama, music, karate and visual arts. I recently sat down with Mechel to talk about the center.

Patch: What is the best aspect of being involved with the Lilburn Cultural Arts Center?

Mechel: I think meeting the community's needs is the best aspect. It's exciting to see when a child's lightbulb goes off. When a child says they can't do something, we ask them to at least try. Once they try they realize it wasn't that hard to begin with, it's very rewarding.

Patch: What is the most challenging aspect of being involved with the center?

Mechel: Making sure we have enough money to provide these programs at a low cost or no cost to the community. We have fundraisers that happen around four times a year. We have a barbeque in July. We also have a golf tournament in September. These fundraisers, paired with donations, will hopefully provide the money we need to continue give children a chance to appreciate the arts.

Patch: What makes the Lilburn Cultural Arts Center unique?

Mechel: We work with families from all different income brackets. Whether they are able to pay or not able to pay we welcome them with open arms. We have a recreational program but we also have a performing arts program for those children who want to excel in the industry. We bring in special instructors to help with our projects as well.

Patch: What makes the Lilburn community special?

Mechel: Lilburn is a really close knit community. It's very family oriented. There are a lot of programs offered in Atlanta but we wanted to help Lilburn by forming the community center here. We wanted to make Lilburn our home and the family oriented, close knit community fit what we were looking for.

Located at 4230 Lawrenceville Hwy., the Lilburn Cultural Arts Center schedule changes daily. Check their website at http://www.foundationforyoutharts.org for class schedules and additional information.
