Find Some Treasures at Antiques in Old Town

Each week we feature a business from our hometown of Lilburn. This week, learn more about Antiques in Old Town.

Hugh and Rowann Wilkerson opened Antiques in Old Town 17 years ago in June of 1994. Located at 93 Main St. in Lilburn, the store has thousands of items for sale, most of which are actual antiques over 100 years old. I recently sat down to talk to the Wilkersons about their business.

Patch: How did you get started in antiques?

Hugh: We inherited it I guess you might say. My parents owned this building, which was built in 1910, and when they passed away we took it over. We opened the store in 1994.

Patch: What is the best aspect about owning an antique store?

Hugh: The variety of people we've made friends with over the years. Being a part of the community we don't really sell a product what I think we sell are memories. People come in and buy things that relate to some part of their past. We're also a social hub. People come in to hang out and talk and find out what's going on in the city too.

Patch: What is the most challenging aspect of owning Antiques in Old Town?

Hugh: Running the business like anything else, you have to pay the light bill.

Patch: What is unique about your business?

Hugh: That we actually have antiques. The word has become so diluted. Depending on your perspective a lot of people bring in things that are not very old but we try to stay true to what an antique is being over 100 years old or more. Not everything we have is 100 years old but that's what we strive for.

Patch: What is your personal business philosophy?

Rowann: We treat our customers like they are our friends. If we treat them good then they'll treat us good.

Patch: What makes the Lilburn community special.

Hugh: I think you have a variety of people here. Lilburn is a town that has roots that go back to the 1820s. It was incorporated in 1910 so it's a fairly old town with deep roots. Our building and our business connect people from across the community. They see us and we're their Main Street, where they grew up and we hold memories for them.

Antiques in Old Town is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
