Happy Ending for Scammed Lilburn Woman

One of the things owner Ron Herring says he tries to live by is an instruction from the Bible: "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act."

So when a supply company contacted him about reroofing, at no charge, the house of an elderly Lilburn woman who had been conned by another contractor, Herring didn't hesitate.

Superior Roofing, also based in Lilburn, provided the labor, and the supply company CRS provided the materials. Normally, Herring would have charged about $8,000 to put a new roof on that house.

"I couldn't believe anyone would be so nice as to do all this for free, for a stranger, but they did," said Joyce Skipwitch as the workers were finishing up her new roof.

A year ago, Skipwitch says, she paid $1,800 to a contractor, paying up front because the roofer said he needed the money to buy supplies. He never came to do the job. Every time she called, he said he would be out the next week. But he never showed up again, and eventually Skipwitch stopped calling.

When Kevin Yates of CRS heard about the scam on WSBTV, he contacted Herring to see if his company and Herrings could right the wrong, and Skipwitch this week got her new roof.

"It's unbelievable," said Linda Medders, Skipwitch's daughter. "When you see something like that, you think you should do more yourself. I can't say enough good things about them."

Herring says his own mother died 12 years ago.

"The way I look at it is, if I can't do anything nice for my mother, I can do something nice for this lady."

Superior Roofing has been in Lilburn for 22 years, and this year won the Consumer Choice Award for Business Excellence for a fourth year in a row from Consumers' Choice Institute.
