Lilburn Restaurant Grades: Know Then Go

A look at restaurant inspections conducted by the health department in Greater Lilburn.

There was a spate of failing grades at Lilburn restaurants this week: Waffle House on Indian Trail, Agavero Cantina and Dominican Restaurant. The last two fared much better in re-inspections. Waffle House hasn't yet had a follow-up visit from the health department.

Below are this week's results of recent Gwinnett County restaurant inspections in Greater Lilburn by the East Metro Health District, which covers Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton counties. Each report includes a synopsis of deficiencies found by the inspector.

Sept. 13

Name and location: , 4140 Lawrenceville Highway

Score: 85/B (follow-up to Sept. 9 inspection)

Previous scores: 41/U on Sept. 9, 2011 and 90/A on June 24, 2011.

Violations cited: Shredded chicken an cooked pork weren't cold enough after cooling overnight. The restaurant used pans that were too deep to cool cooked chicken in an ice bath.

Score: 100/A (follow-up to Sept. 12 inspection)

Previous scores: 48/U on Sept. 12, 2011 and 98/A on July 8, 2011

Violations cited: None.

 

Sept. 12

Name and location: , 529 Indian Trail road

Score: 88/B

Previous scores: 92/A on Jan. 23, 2011 and 91/A on July 7, 2010

Violations cited: Pizza sauce didn't cool down fast enough after cooking. A gap at a side exit was spotted, and the restaurant was advised to put in new weather stripping or guard to keep out pests.

 

Sept. 9

Name and location: 950 Indian Trail Road

Score: 88/B (follow-up to Sept. 7 inspection)

Previous scores: 79/C on Sept. 7, 2011 and 95/A on June 28, 2011

Violations cited: An employee was chopping carrots and potatoes without using gloves, and no gloves were in supply. A rusted paint brush was being used for the garlic/olive oil mixture. A garlic grinder was made of wood that couldn't be easily cleaned. Part of the kitchen floor tile was chipped.

 

Sept. 8

Score: 98/A (follow-up to Sept. 2 inspection)

Previous scores: 77/C on Sept. 2, 2011 and 96/A on Jan. 28. 2011

Violations cited: The flooring in the cook's area needed repairing so that it's easily cleanable.

 

Sept. 7

Name and location: , 484 Indian Trail

Score: 67/U

Previous scores: 91/A on Feb. 11, 2011 and 91/A on Aug. 31, 2010

Violations cited: An employee used the hand-washing sink to prepare a sanitizing bucket. The ice machine had mold on the inside and on the baffle holding the ice. The dishwasher wasn't hot enough to sanitize dishes. Grits weren't being kept hot enough. Waffle batter in the cooler wasn't marked with a preparation date. Eggs in shells were touching a pool of liquid in the cooler. Pies and cut lemons were kept below a leak in the cooler. Banana nougat was stored under a leak in a freezer. The men's restroom didn't have a sign reminding employees to wash their hands. The most recent inspection result wasn't posted. The disposable drinking-cup dispenser didn't have protective metal caps. A refrigeration unit of a cooler was leaking. There were no test strips to check the strength of the chlorine sanitizer. There was too much food debris in the cooler drawers where cheese, ham and tortillas were kept. The dry storage area needed sweeping. The fly paper was full of flies and needed replacing. There was a gap at the back door that needed sealing to keep out pests.

Previous scores: 58/U on Sept. 2, 2011 and 100/A on July 28, 2011

Violations cited: Wanton skins were stored below raw eggs in shells. Shrimp and crab rangoon mix weren't properly separated in storage. Spoons and forks weren't kept so they could air dry correctly. The PVC piping under the vegetable sink had a leak.
