Restaurant Grades: Know Then Go

A look at restaurant inspections conducted by the health department in Greater Lilburn.

Below are this week's results of recent Gwinnett County restaurant inspections in Greater Lilburn by the East Metro Health District, which covers Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton counties. Each report includes a synopsis of deficiencies found by the inspector.

October 31

Violations cited: Milk wasn't kept cold enough. An employee's beard was too long and he wasn't wearing a beard guard. There was a pool of grease under the hotdog roller. Some trash bags were placed outside the dumpster. Flooring in the cook's area needed repairing. The light bulb in the walk-in cooler wasn't working.

Violations cited: An employee had an open beverage on top of the food prep table. Hot Shot pesticide was being used to control pests, but it's not approved for restaurant use. One sink faucet and assembly were leaking.

Score: 90/A

Previous scores: 82/B on Aug. 27, 2011 and 56/U on Aug. 18, 2011

Violations cited: The plate and inside of the microwave were dirty. Cooked sausage and potatoes were held for more than seven days in the cooler.

Violations cited: An employee was seen handling raw shrimp, then putting on gloves without washing hands to handle vegetables, and an employee was seen doing the same thing with raw steak. Vegetable and dinner knives and multi-use containers had food residue on them. The plate and inside of the microwave was dirty. Some meat lasagna, moussaka and minced beef in the cooler were not dated. Bowls of salad were stacked on each other in a cooler. A wall needed cleaning. The fan guards in the walk-in cooler and the ceiling above the refrigeration unit were dusty. Filters were missing in the ventilation hood. The flooring was chipped in the dishwashing area. Roaches were seen on a wall, and one crawled out of the beer tap in the bar.

Score: 63/U

Previous scores: 87/B on April 4, 2011 and 95/A on Sept. 16, 2011

Violations cited: The person in charge didn't know minimum temperatures for cooked food. An employee had some raw egg on a glove from cracking eggs and then handled bread and cheese. An employee was seen taking an unwashed metal container and scoop from the dishwasher, rinsing it with the sprayer and putting it back on the sandwich stand for use. Hashbrowns, diced ham, diced tomato, sliced tomatoes, and sliced cheese on the sandwich line weren't cold enough. Raw eggs and milk in a cooler weren't cold enough (Coolers weren't keeping the right temperature).  There was no thermometer in a reach-in cooler at the sandwich station. Rehydrated hasbrowns were stored in contact with the floor of a cooler, and the liquid had leaked out. The metal caps at the beverage cup stall were missing. A door in the women's restroom needed repairing.
