Restaurant Grades: Know Then Go

A look at restaurant inspections conducted by the health department in Greater Lilburn.

 

Below are this week's results of recent Gwinnett County restaurant inspections in Greater Lilburn by the East Metro Health District, which covers Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton counties. Each report includes a synopsis of some of the deficiencies found by the inspector.

Violations cited: The restaurant was making its own yogurt, which is not allowed in restaurants. Raw animal foods were stored incorrectly with ready-to-eat foods. Some utensils and a magnetic plate hadn't been cleaned after being used the day before. Opened tomato puree was kept in the can. Cloth was used to cover the naan dough. All were corrected on site.

Violations cited: An employee hurt her hand and took ice from the machine with her bare hands. Corrected on site.

Inspection type: follow-up

Previous scores: 78/C on March 8, 2012 and 93/A on July 28, 2011

Violations cited: Foods in the walk-in cooler weren't kept cold enough. A manager called a technician to repair the cooler. Some foods held under time control weren't labeled for the controls. All corrected on site.

Murray's in a Hurry, 722 Harbins Road

Previous scores: 71/C on March 12, 2012 and 91/A on Dec. 28, 2011; 77/C on Dec. 20, 2011

Violations cited: The handle of a pizza spreader had an open seam that had trapped food debris. A toilet room door didn't close automatically. Some floor tiles were missing at the food prep area, and lights in the dining area needed shields.

Inspection type: complaint

Previous scores: 87/B on Feb. 21, 2012 and 94/A on Oct. 21, 2011

Violations cited: Some open containers of barbecue pork were labeled to use within 10 days instead of the required seven. A bag of beef toppings was stored in an open pan of shredded cheese in the pizza prep cooler. Both corrected on site.

Rubello's Pizzeria, 331 Rockbridge Road

Score: 81/A

Inspection type: routine

Previous scores: 91/A on Nov. 8, 2011 and 92/A on April 21, 2011

Violations cited: Some pizza sauce hadn't cooled down enough within the required time frame. Some salad greens, pizza dough and shredded cheese packages were stored beneath a leak in a reach-in cooler. The overhead light wasn't working in the women's restroom, and there was no light in a storage room.

Inspection type: routine

Previous scores: 83/A on Oct. 31, 2011 and 98/A on Sept. 8, 2011

Violations cited: Food was stored below a leaking refrigeration unit and tray to catch the leaking fluid. Corrected on site. A sanitizer bucket was stored on the floor. Corrected on site. Clean tongs were stored next to a compartment for dirty dishes, and the tongs are exposed when the sprayer is used.

Inspection type: routine

Previous scores: 87/B on Oct. 21, 2011 and 92/A on Sept. 8, 2011

Violations cited: The store didn't have a food safety manager. This must be corrected by March 29. An employee rinsed hands without using soap before preparing food. Some foods weren't kept cold enough in a reach-in cooler, and the cooler wasn't kept at a low enough temperature. Some foods were stored below a leaking refrigeration unit.
