Home of Lilburn Soccer Academy is for Sale

The 6.8-acre facility on Arcado Road in Lilburn is for sale. In 1985, Mike "Michael" Balson helped spearhead opening the indoor-outdoor facility.

nearly 30-year history in Lilburn may be coming to a close, as its 6.8-acre site on Arcado Road is for sale.

According to leasing agent Kristen Davis, the soccer complex has been on the market for more than 70 days, and the asking price is $1.7 million. Although it has been used as a soccer facility since 1985, the new buyer need not operate one, she said.

The facility first opened 27 years ago, as part of a dream of famed soccer coach Michael "Mike" Balson to revolutionize indoor soccer in Gwinnett County, and in Georgia. The first of its kind around, the facility's leagues, summer programs and classes became easily recognizable.

Henry "Dan" Daniel has been the owner since then, but now he wants to retire, Davis said. His daughter, Natalie Daniel, runs the academy now.

Like Balson, she's well known for her soccer prowess, having set state records at Brookwood High School and led the nation in goals while attending Lenoir-Rhyne College.

Reached Thursday afternoon, Dan Daniel said he's planning to "semi-retire," and briefly recalled when notable sports figures came to work out there. In those days, it was the best indoor facility around, he said.*

"This place used to be just gangbusters," Daniel said.

While the Daniels look for a new property owner, the current site's programs are still ongoing at the moment.

Amenities for interested buyers include: two indoor soccer fields, one outdoor soccer field, office space, retail space, and a snack bar. There is also a security system, sprinkler system and partial fencing.

The date of possession is negotiable.

This would be a terrific location for a dog agility and dog obedience and dog play center. There is no "Gymboree for Dogs" in the Lilburn area. A good example would be: The Dog's Place in Canton, GA http://agilitytraining.thedogsplace.us/contact-us.html or Canine Capers in Norcross. http://www.caninecapersagility.com/ or Sirius Dog Agility in Decatur, GA http://www.siriusdogagility.com/

It cannot be understated how important the Soccer Academy has been in soccer development in Gwinnett, indoor and outdoor. Mike Balson is a Georgia Soccer Hall of Fame coach, mainly for bringing soccer to our youth. The number of state championships won by Gwinnett high-school and rec teams has to be in the hundreds. Natalie Daniel herself was a record-breaking player at Brookwood High School.

All of my children have participated in leagues out of the Soccer Academy. It would be a huge loss to the community to lose this venue. Hopefully someone will come in and continue this facility.
