You Can Help Shape U.S. 29's Future at Meeting Tonight

Highway 29 Corridor Study holds 6:30 p.m. meeting at Providence Christian Academy.

What residents want to see happen along the Lilburn's busiest road is what they'll see reflected in a public meeting tonight at Providence Christian Academy.

The meeting is the third scheduled with the public as part of the Lilburn Community Improvement District's ongoing Highway 29 Corridor Study, which the group hopes will shape the future and create a user-friendly destination point for the area.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and will present two alternative plans on what the corridor might look like, incorporating the results of recent public meetings, as well as an online survey.

Two things that stood out in the survey were aesthetics and arts and culture choices, said Lilburn CID Executive Director Gerald McDowell.

"Right now, Highway 29, in their [survey-takers] word, is ugly and they would like to see an effort to beautiful the area," McDowell said. "Everything from streetscapes, to sidewalks, to architecture."

Residents also want more to do culturally, whether it's theater, museums or performance centers. "People want to be able to get in their car and drive somewhere in Greater Lilburn to find arts and culture."

Tonight's meeting will be the study's interpretation of public sentiment, and give the CID more information that it can use later when it sells Lilburn to developers.

After the meeting, conclusions of the study will be reviewed for more public input on Jan. 27 before the final draft is presented March 3.
