Observances and Celebrations: May 16 is the 136th day of the year and there is a plethora (yes … a PLETHORA!) of things to celebrate today! It is the anniversary of the first Academy Awards Celebration – The introduction of Oscar was on May 16, 1929! May 16th is also Free World Animal Day – a focus on saving endangered species, preventing animal cruelty worldwide. Food celebrations abound as International Pickle Day, and for historical significance, on this day in history both Spaghettios and Spam appeared on the market. And any school kid can tell you that it is Pizza Party Day. If you’re the “green” sort, you can Love A Tree today, while celebrating National Bike to Work Day.

The weirdest observance is that May 16th is Wear Purple for Peace Day. Who KNOWS where this came from, but apparently it should signify to any aliens coming to earth that they are welcome. Purple. It’s not just for dinosaurs anymore.

City Business: Tonight at 6:30 the Lilburn Downtown Development Authority will have their work session and it will be followed by their meeting. In the First Avenue Annex.
