Acetylene Tank Causes Fire at Lilburn Business

The incident took place at Porter Steel off Arcado Road on Friday, July 12.

An acetylene tank caused a fire at a Lilburn business Friday afternoon (July 12).

The incident took place at Porter Steel, located at 114 Arcado Rd. No injuries were reported, according to Gwinnett County Fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden.

Fire crews extinguished the flames on the tank and mitigated the acetylene. The fire didn't extend to surrounding businesses, Rhoden continued.

News tips sent to Lilburn Patch reported multiple fire trucks, hazmat crews and police cars lining Arcado Road and Lilburn Industrial Way.

According to Airgas, acetylene is "a colorless, flammable gas with a garlic-like odor." With the "highest flame temperature of any common hydrocarbon," the gas "allows it to be used in a variety of metal working applications like cutting, welding, brazing and soldering."
