An Early Independence Day Surprise: Firework Damages Mailbox

Inside the Police Reports: A Lilburn couple said a firework caused their mailbox to explode in the early morning hours one day last week.

One Lilburn couple received an early Independence Day surprise in their mailbox last week.

According to the Gwinnett County Police report, the 62-year-old husband claims that someone had placed a firework in their black mailbox off Hickory Drive near Five Forks Trickum Road.

The mailbox exploded into pieces, causing the bottom, front and back to separate from the hood.

The man showed the officer the firework, which had "festival balls" on it.

He also told police that he heard the explosion around 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. last Monday, June 24. He, his wife and his neighbor did not see anyone or anything out of the ordinary around that time.

The $20 mailbox was already replaced when police arrived, and the firework was placed into evidence.

Inside the Police Reports runs regularly every week. The information is based solely on police incident reports provided on request.
