Census Data Released; Gwinnett Grows by 36.9 Percent

County's population up from 588,488 in 2000 to 805,321 in 2010.

Gwinnett County is Georgia’s second most populated county, based on 2010 figures released Thursday afternoon by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Gwinnett’s population grew to 805,321 in 2010, an increase of 36.9 percent from its 2000 population of 588,488, according to the Census Bureau. Gwinnett is second behind Fulton County, which grew from 816,006 to 920,581 (12.8 percent) over the past 10 years.

Gwinnett was followed by DeKalb County with 691,893, Cobb County with 688,078, and Chatham County with 265,128.

Georgia’s population increased from 8,186,453 in 2000 to 9,687,653 in 2010, an increase of 18.3 percent. Atlanta’s 2000 population was recorded at 420,003 in 2010 compared to 416,474 in 2000, an increase of only 0.8 percent.           

Georgia gained a Congressional seat as a result of the 2010 Census, bringing the total of U.S. representatives for the state to 14.

Race figures for 2010 in Georgia, according to the Census: white, 5,787,440 (or 59.7 percent of the state’s population), black or African-American, 2,950,435 (30.5 percent); other race, 388,872 (4 percent); Asian, 314,467 (3.2 percent); two or more races, 207,489 (2.1 percent); American Indian or Alaska native, 32,151 (0.3 percent); Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, 6,799 (0.1 percent).

Hispanics or Latinos, not counted as a race in the Census, accounted for 853,689 residents (8.8 percent).

The numbers for different races living in Gwinnett County for 2010 were white, 429,563; black or African-American, 190,167; Asian, 85,292; Some other race, 70,492; Two or more races, 25,292; American Indian and Alaska Native, 4,038; Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 477. The Hispanic or Latino population was 162,035.
