Do You Feel Safe Walking on Sidewalks Along Major Roads?

In light of the two women who were struck and killed while on the sidewalk on Lawrenceville Highway, locals may have second thoughts when walking near high-traffic areas.

A 6-year-old girl and her mother from Lilburn have died at the hands of a driver under the influence Thursday (July 18) on Lawrenceville Highway.

The two weren't in a car, and they weren't in the street; they were simply walking on the paved sidewalk in front of a church at the intersection of Harbins Road. Police say the vehicle hopped the curb and struck the two, who died at the scene.

Since then, the driver has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide.

Sidewalks are constructed using taxpayers' dollars for people to use it. But considering something such as this tragic incident has happened, we at Patch wonder if local residents are having second thoughts on using them along major roads, or any streets for that matter.

On the other hand, some don't seem fazed by the news. Lilburn Patch went out to the scene of the hit-and-run Friday (July 19) and discovered many kids were still using the sidewalk.

Do you normally use sidewalks? Do you think they're unsafe? Do you let your children use them? Tell us in the comments below.
