Five Things to Know Today, April 6

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

It's Friday, April 6, the last day of Spring Break.  Do you have fantastic spring photos you want to share?  Upload them in our neighborhood gallery.

The weather:  The temperature is definitely cooler today, with a high of 68.  It will be cloudy most of the day with showers throughout the morning.

Gas Prices: Nearly identical to yesterday.  At least prices aren't going up... yet.  The lowest was available at the Kroger on Lawrenceville Hwy. for $3.74, while the most expensive in town was $3.81 at Gulf on Arcado and N. River Rd.

Good Friday:  A traditional Christian celebration, Good Friday takes place on the Friday before Easter. The holiday is meant to honor the day that Jesus Christ was crucified for the forgiveness of the world's sins, according to Christian tradition.  There will be many Good Friday services in Lilburn this evening, including Christ the King Episcopal (noon-3 p.m.), Good Shepherd Presbyterian (7 p.m.), St. John Neumann Catholic Church (7 p.m.) and Parkview Church (7 p.m.).

Precursor to the Arab Spring:  The April 6 Youth Movement began on this day in 2008, a precursor to the string of protests and government upheavals that would take place later across the Middle East.  It began as a Facebook page dedicated to standing in solidarity with a textile worker's protest.  It exploded into a movement of 70,000 young people, according to PBS' Frontline.  Yemen, and Egypt saw their leadership removed last year, while civil war and riots still smolder in nations like Syria.  Check out this interactive timeline created by The Guardian that gives a nearly minute-by-minute account of the Arab Spring.

World War I:  On this day in 1917, the United States declared war on Germany.  It seems to be a popular day for the beginning of battles.  In 1862, the Battle of Shiloh began in Tennessee under Union General Ulysses S. Grant.  In 1865, as the American Civil War raged on, the Battle of Sayler's Creek began under Confederate General Robert E. Lee.  In 1941, Nazi Germany invaded Yugoslavia and Greece on this day, and American troops began their Easter Offensives in Vietnam in 1972.  Finally, the Rwandan Genocide began on this day in 1994.  Hopefully today will be less eventful.
