Five Things to Know Today, Oct. 13

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday, Lilburn. We've almost made it to the weekend, and here are some things to know as you head there -- especially for the nerdy among us.

The weather: 40 percent chance of rain, high of about 76, according to the National Weather Service. Must be fall! The low tonight will be around 52 degrees.

Gas prices: Hmm. Going up? Still hard to say. The national average for a gallon of regular is at $3.405, up from $3.396 yesterday, according to AAA. In Georgia, the average is $3.282. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.15 (at Marathon, 119 Harmony Grove Road near Lost Grove Drive) to $3.29 (at Shell, 775 Beaver Ruin Road at Burns Road).

Apple season: So you think it's just some fruit? The original apple trees may have come from somewhere between Turkey and Kazakhstan, and may have been brought back to the Greeks by Alexander the Great. Crossed with European types, they turned into a rare treat, a sweet food our ancestors could keep over the winter without artificial refrigeration. There's a lot of history in that Braeburn or Granny Smith you're holding. Enjoy!

Boo! In the Halloween mood yet? Time is running out to pre-register for Haunted Night at the Museum held Oct. 21 and 22 in Lawrenceville. It's a family event with historic "ghosts," storytelling, face painting, and spooky crafts galore. If you register by Oct. 19, you can buy four tickets at $6 per person and get one free.

Rock it. It's not too late to get into the dirt for National Earth Science Week that is meant to turn us all, kids and grownups, on to the cool things geology finds about our planet. They're even on Facebook.
