Five Things You Need To Know July 5

Here's your daily dose of what to know today.

Good morning, Lilburn. Here’s a digital check list for Tuesday, July 5.

  1. Fantastic Fourth: Those who attended Lilburn’s Star-Spangled Celebration Monday already know this, but it bears repeating. The concert and fireworks in was simply a whole lot of fun. The surf music from local bands StratoGeezer and the Surge was thoroughly delicious and the fireworks display — including sparklers being passed out to the crowd — was small-town cool. Let’s hope this is the start of an annual event!
  2. And Now for the Weather: We like weather reporting at Lilburn Patch HQ (even though it‘s not always the way we want it). Expect a high temp of 91 degrees with a 40-percent chance of storms. And rain is in the forecast, according to Weather.com, into next week.
  3. Lilburn History: The three oldest churches in Lilburn date back to pre-Civil War, according the city's website. Camp Creek Primitive Baptist Church, the first church created in Lilburn, was formed in 1823. Salem Primitive Baptist and First Baptist Lilburn (then known as Lilberty Baptist Church) both formed in 1840. All three churches are still active.
  4. Looking Ahead: Hopefully, the weather will cooperate with Friday’s Lilburn Idol II competition (Lilburn Idol I was rained out and re-scheduled for July 29).  Bring your quarters (they’re used in the voting) and see some of the best singing talent our community has to offer. Performances begin at 7 p.m.
  5. Hot Dog Controversy: We think three hot dogs is enough for any person, so the 62 Joey Chestnut ate in 10 minutes Monday is not hard to believe as being the winning ingestion at the Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island, N.Y. But, wait. Seems that championship-eating great Takeru Kobayashi ate 69 “in exile” at the same time. Kobayashi is in a contract dispute and did not compete with the rest of his buds. Read all about it here.
