Lilburn Boy Recognized for Saving Mom's Life

Mayor Johnny Crist gave an honorary pin to Alexander Hendry Betts IV, 10, for calling 911 when his mother fell ill last week.

A 10-year-old boy in Lilburn was recognized at Monday's city council meeting for saving his mom's life.

Mayor Johnny Crist explained the boy's story before presenting him with an honorary pin at the July 8th meeting.

On July 2, Alexander Hendry Betts IV called his dad and 911 when his mother became ill in their Lilburn home. Under pressure, Alexander was able to communicate his mother's conditions and their location to the dispatcher.

An ambulance from Fire Station 2 arrived and his mother was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. The father also arrived soon after from his workplace in Atlanta.

"Without Alexander's cool head and ability to fight back his personal fear and panic, my wife would have perished," said his father in an email to the mayor.

"You give hope for the next generation," said Crist. "We're [the council] up there to help people just like you become leaders in our city."
