Lilburn Notes: Idol Registration, New Bridge on Killian Hill and Other Tidbits

Registration is open for this year’s Lilburn Idol competition, which begins in June. Auditions begin in May.

Audition dates (all at 5:30 p.m.) are: Monday, May 16; Thursday, May 19 and Thursday, June 9.

Performance dates (all at 7 p.m.): Lilburn Idol I, Friday, June 24; Lilburn Idol II, Friday, July 8; Finale, Friday, Aug. 5. The rain date if either of the first rounds is rained out is Friday, July 29.

Killian Hill Bridge to be Replaced: The bridge on Killian Hill Road over the Yellow River will be replaced in the coming year, the county Board of Commissioners approved recently.

The commissioners approved $4.16 million in SPLOST money for a wider bridge and to improve, widen and add turn lanes on the road on both sides of the river. The contract was awarded to Sunbelt Construction of Tucker.

The project is expected to be finished by late 2012.

The Killian Hill bridge was one of many in the area that was closed during the September 2009 flood.

The Board also approved $1.5 million to replace the Lee Road bridge at No Business Creek in south Gwinnett, expected to be completed in mid-2012. E.R. Snell Contractors of Snellville was the low bidder for the contract.

"The 2009 SPLOST is providing for the replacement of two of our older bridges in the county and improving safety for the travelling public while reducing future operating costs that would be associated with maintaining the older structures,” Gwinnett DOT Director Brian Allen said in a press release.

Parts of Arcado Road Closed Sunday: Portions of Arcado Road will be closed to traffic Sunday for the Arcado Elementary School PTA Annual Fun Run. The portion of Arcado Road affected is between Rockbridge and Lilburn-Stone Mountain roads. The race will be held 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
