Locals Remember Mother, Daughter Killed in Hit-and-Run With Memorial

Stuffed animals and flowers can be seen at two sites outside Calvary Baptist Church on Lawrenceville Highway.

Two memorials have been set along Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn for the mother and daughter who died in Thursday's hit-and-run.

Flowers, stuffed animals, candles and messages surround two crosses with the names of Maria Cervantes-Maldonado, 36, and her Melissa Paola Cervantes, 6.

"It's so sad," said one woman at the site in from of Cavalry Baptist Church. "You can't even walk on the sidewalk anymore."

She and a young teenage girl were at the memorial Tuesday afternoon to show their respects and give a red teddy bear. While they knew the two victims on a more personal level, they said the mother and daughter would always shop for groceries on foot.
