Neighbors Helping Neighbor

Reader-generated content: Home Depot, homeowners band together to help eldery woman get up to code.

Beginning in March, an unusual team of volunteers from Lilburn, the Springwood Neighborhood, Killian Hill Baptist Church and Home Depot, started working together to help a neighbor in need.

The home of Jan Hitchcock in the Springwood Neighborhood was reported to the City of Lilburn Code Enforcement Office because it failed to meet code.

Being elderly and disabled, Mrs. Hitchcock did not have the financial means to make the necessary repairs.

Using Home Depot’s “Team Depot” program, which offers grants for elders, veterans and victims of disaster, the team was able to secure a grant for materials.

And on a hot Thursday, June 19, the volunteers came to Mrs. Hitchcock’s home to begin making repairs.  “Team Depot” took the lead, Springwood neighbors filled in where needed and Killian Hill Baptist Church provided food and drinks to keep the workers hydrated and happy.

Further repairs need to be completed and all three groups remain committed to making sure that Mrs. Hitchcock’s code complaint is closed out.
