U.S. Postal Service to Halt Saturday Mail
The new change begins in August, but does not impact P.O. Boxes or package delivery. The move is estimated to save $2 billion annually.
The United States Postal Service announced today (Feb. 6) that the end is near for Saturday delivery.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, Saturday mail delivery will end in August. The move, which does not affect package delivery, is expected to save $2 billion annually.
Post Offices currently open on Saturday, however, will remain open on those days. Mail delivered to P.O. Boxes will continue on Saturday, as well.

"The Postal Service is advancing an important new approach to delivery that reflects the strong growth of our package business and responds to the financial realities resulting from America’s changing mailing habits," said Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe, in a media release.

"We developed this approach by working with our customers to understand their delivery needs and by identifying creative ways to generate significant cost savings."
On Tuesday, The Huffington Post reported that Hallmark Cards, Inc. has hired lobbyists who will ask Congress to keep Saturday delivery and consider other cost-saving measures.
According to the report, postal workers say the move could result in the loss of 80,000 jobs.
