Video Report: Lilburn Girl Scouts Day Camp

Popular start-of-summer camp celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The popular Lilburn Girl Scouts Day Camp, sponsored by the Girl Scouts Council of Greater Atlanta, is celebrating 30 years this week of bringing fun, fellowship and lessons to area children.

Around 400 campers, 100 parent volunteers and 100 program aides (seventh grade and up) are participating in the event, which runs through Friday at Lilburn City Park.

The anniversary also marks the retirement after 15 years (10 years as director) of Martha Whitman, who succeeded Deanna Simmons, who was the director for the previous 15 years.

On Wednesday, Lilburn Mayor Diana Preston made two proclamations, one declaring the day Lilburn Girl Scout Day Camp Day, the other honoring Whitman on her retirement.

“It’s the 104 adult volunteers who are the keys in keeping this camp running,” Whitman said. “It is all these amazing parts, these amazing women that make it all happen.”
