Lilburn Resident Using Kickstarter to Fund Little Free Library

Laurel Rosenberg said she was motivated to build a Little Free Library because of her love of books.

A Lilburn reading enthusiast is using Kickstarter to raise money for a Little Free Library in her community.

Laurel Rosenberg started the fundraising campaign in mid-July, and the project will only be funded if $650 is raised by Aug. 18. As of earlier July 26, $52 had been pledged.

She is hoping to open a Little Free Library, which is designed as a birdhouse, on her home's property. It would be a place where neighbors could share books for free.

With Kickstarter, Rosenberg retains the property rights to her project, but can use the greater community to fund her idea and donate books. Essentially, it's crowdfunding.

On her project's page, Rosenberg explained her motivation:

"Books have helped me get through some tough times. I still have many cherished books from childhood that I have held onto for 25, 30 years. What else can you say that about?

"Books have value, beyond money. Literacy gives freedom and opportunity. Books give information and fuel imaginations. At the risk of sounding like an old lady, in a world where TV and computer games and even digital books are taking over, there is something so precious about sharing a physical book. Feeling the pages, smelling the paper.

"Books endure through it all."
