Local Weather Forecasts For Viewing the 2012 Transit of Venus

The 2004 Transit of Venus was obscured by clouds in 2004 in Georgia preventing an observation of the spectacle. How about this year?

According to Weather.com, Georgians may have the same experience in 2012, but enthusiasts are hopeful that that the prediction of "partly cloudy" will allow for at least even a brief tracking of the Transit of Venus across the Sun. As of 3:30 p.m., the showers were gone, but the skies were still a bit gloomy.

Weather.com forecasts a clearing in the 4:00 hour, in plenty of time for the , but those watching from the top of Stone Mountain or at   in the Loganville/Grayson area might have to hope for a parting of the clouds for a really good viewing. The Venus Transit will begin at 6:04 EDT according to transitofvenus.org.

At Stone Mountain Park, Atlanta Astronomy Club members will bring their solar filtered telescopes to share with the public on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Meet them at the top of the mountain for a spectacular viewing.

The Charles Elliott Chapter of the Atlanta Astronomy Club is setting up at Bay Creek Park from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to help residents view the across the sun. This will be the last time this will happen for another 105 years, so it is a not to be missed opportunity for everyone.

The Loganville Patch reports that according to the Charles Elliott Astronomy site, volunteers will have telecopes set up near the soccer fields. These are "all purpose" fields that are currently under construction. However, Steve Siedentop, a member of the club from Grayson, said the telescopes will be set up in the parking lot across from the fields. As far as the weather, Siedentop believes there will be an opportunity when the clouds part for local residents to have a good shot at viewing this once in a lifetime event.
