Five Things To Know Aug. 5

Here's our daily dose to help cure what ails you.

Good morning, Lilburn. It's Friday, Aug. 5. Happy birthday Neil Armstrong.

1. Help a Local School: It’s Lilburn Elementary School PTA Night tonight at the Lilburn Farmer’s Market (4 p.m.-8 p.m.), raising awareness of the successes and needs of the only public elementary school inside the city limits. The Decatur Ukulele Society will provide the entertainment. You can find out more about the PTA is doing on its website.

2. Best of the Best: It’s for all the marbles — well, plaques actually — at tonight’s finale in . The best singers from the previous two preliminary rounds square off in several categories. If you haven’t attended previous Idol performances, you will find this a very entertaining event. It’s definitely worth your attention. Check it out.

3. Weekend Weather Watch: The final “free” weekend of the summer before Monday’s start of the school year could include some thunderstorms, according to forecasters. Weather.com says it’ll be 92 degrees (30 percent chance of rain) today, 89 (60 percent) Saturday and 90 (40 percent) Sunday. WeatherBug has it 97 (40 percent), 94 (50 percent) Saturday and 95 (40 percent) Sunday.

4. Gotta See the Cow Chip Bingo: The are scheduled Saturday at the high school stadium with a big emphasis on the 2011 edition of the Panthers. But that’s not the only reason to attend. Just three words: Cow Chip Bingo. For $10 a square, you buy a spot in one of the end zones in which you think a cow — yes, an actual cow — will leave its mark. The winner gets $500. We love this game (although we don’t care to know how they make the cow do its business). The event, which includes inflatables and other fun for the kids, starts at 6 p.m. and ends with a performance by the marching band and player introductions by Head Coach Cecil Flowe. The event will be preceded by a NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition at 4:30 p.m. To register for the PP&K, click here, click on "find a competition," enter zip code 30047 and choose Parkview High School.
