Everywhere you turn these days, you can read advice columns about the best way to make and keep New Year’s resolutions and how to enhance your chances of successfully achieving your goals. This year, however, I’m very happy to have 2011 behind me and have started looking at 2012 with a slightly more indulgent approach.
According to Wikipedia some of the most popular resolutions are to improve your health, improve your career, improve your education, improve yourself in general, or take a trip.
After several decades of living on this planet, taking trips and trying to improve myself year after year, I’m getting really comfortable with just the way I am. This year I don’t really feel the need for a stringent improvement regimen, so I’ve decided to flip my approach and will resolve to:
1. Drink more champagne. Let’s face it: Even if you don’t like to drink, just watching the little bubbles dancing in the glass can make you feel better.
2. Eat more chocolate. Yes, that’s right. I’m planning on springing for the really good stuff (my favorite is the dark chocolate with a touch of chili powder) once or twice a week and savoring every morsel.
3. Put my feet up on the coffee table. After all, it’s my table!
4. Use the good china and crystal. What the heck am I saving this for? I love to see and use all of these lovely objects and to have them sit in the cabinet all year long seems like such a waste.
5. Spend more rainy/icy days in my pajamas. Now that we’ve hit January in Atlanta, we all know that the ice storms are just around the corner. I’m looking forward to hanging out in my pajamas one rainy/icy day and cuddling up with either my honey or a good book – or maybe both.
Oscar Wilde wrote, "A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other."
If you’ve spent the past several years improving yourself, then maybe it’s time to focus on indulging yourself a bit for a change and enjoying the fruits of your labor.
