Op-Ed: President's Re-Election Shows Country Wasn't 'Fooled' by Romney

Ilene Johnson, who was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, is elated the country didn't listen to Mitt Romney's "smooth talk," and instead sided with her hope for the future.

Last September I was proud to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and re-nominate Barack Obama to be President of the United States. I was elated last night to have witnessed his re-election.

I was concerned over the past week that President Obama would not win, and my husband and I were worried about what kind of future our daughter would have in America; an America without support for public education, access to healthcare and too eager to go to war. I was concerned that the same people who ran the Bush administration and got us into the Iraq fiasco would be calling the shots again. My conservative friends who complain about the ‘welfare state’ are the same ones benefiting from all these programs and would be hard pressed to pay for their parents’ health expenses without Medicare or their children’s schooling without public education.

I am comforted by the fact that the voters of the United States did not fall for Mr. Romney’s smooth talk. And, they did not listen to the lies and trash talk put forth by the extreme right wing of the Republican Party which were ugly and did nothing to help bring this country together to solve problems. We kept hearing the same shrill nonsense that the President is a foreigner/Muslim/communist/socialist/atheist along with everything else that would have been swept under the rug had Mr. Romney done it.

The Romneys do not seem to understand the middle class. Mr. Romney’s comments about the 47 percent were appalling. Anne Romney’s comment “That’s all YOU PEOPLE are going to get” when talking about releasing more of Mr. Romney’s tax returns was insensitive. I have no doubt that Mrs. Romney put in some work raising five boys, but she does not count her pennies at the grocery store like I and my neighbors do. The Romneys' attitude towards their fellow Americans reflects that.

I understand people change their views on issues, but Mr. Romney seemed to change his every week. I felt I could not trust him in the event he would want to send our young people to war. How would we know what the facts were? You cannot fool all of the people all of the time and yesterday the American people showed they were not fooled.

I am proud of our president’s accomplishments. I am pleased we have someone handling foreign affairs with a smart brain and a cool head who speaks softly and carries a big stick. I am pleased we have someone who knows the difference between a hand out and a helping hand up. We have a future now. God bless the United States of America.
