Apartment Building Fire in Norcross Area

An apartment fire off Dawson Boulevard in the Norcross area torched a 20-unit building this afternoon. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, which was still ongoing Monday afternoon.

Gwinnett County Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, in the , around 1:20 p.m., according to Cpt. Jeff Johnson. They quickly realized that more personnel would be necessary and called in two extra engines to put out the blaze, he said.

Simone Sasso, who lived in the apartment building, looked onto the scene in dismay as fire crews continued to try to knock out the flames. “They are just material things,” she said. “I feel bad because I lost two cats, though.” 

Sasso, a five-year resident of the complex, was not home when the fire broke out. And, luckily, her son was at school and her husband had just left their home about 30 minutes before the blaze, she said.

She said she was mostly upset about the lost pictures and memories—and her cats, which she knows her son will be distraught about.

The building, which had 20 units in it, will likely be a complete loss, according to Johnson. Only three of the 20 unites were occupied and Red Cross has been notified to assist the effected families. The apartment management is currently looking for vacant units for the families to stay in, according to Johnson.
