Burglar Attempts to Steal ATM With Van, Cable

Inside the Police Reports: A steel cable was found with one end coming from a van and the other end wrapped around an ATM sign from a CVS pharmacy in the Norcross area.

Gwinnett County Police believe a suspect or suspects attempted to steal the ATM inside a CVS pharmacy using a van that may have been stolen from a Lilburn daycare center.

Officers reported to a burglary alarm that went off at the 1190 Indian Trail Road business in the Norcross area around 2:29 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, according to the police report.

The store's front windows were broken, and police believe it was smashed with the hammer found near the glass. The Chase bank ATM was behind the glass in the store, but the ATM sign donning the bank name was not attached.

The sign was located nearby with a steel cable wrapped around it, the report says. The other end of the cable was attached to an unoccupied, but running, van that was parked at the store's back entrance.

It is believed that the cable was thrown over the top of the ATM and the vehicle attempted to pull out the ATM, but failed to complete the task.

No suspects were located in the building or the surrounding areas.

Police found that the vehicle, a light blue or gray Chevrolet van, was from Little Adorables Child Care Center in the city of Lilburn. The vehicle had not been listed as stolen, but after speaking with the victim of the daycare center, Lilburn police informed Gwinnett police that they would complete a stolen vehicle report.

Pictures were taken of the broken windows, ATM and the van, and the ATM company was contacted about the attempted theft. The van, the Chase sign and the hammer were transported to the police department.
