Driver in Fatal Accident Surrenders, Facing Vehicular Homicide Charges

Sharon Mitchell-Golden turned herself in to police Thursday morning.

-----------

The driver in a fatal Wednesday morning accident has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a Lawrenceville teen.

Sharon Mitchell-Golden, of Stone Mountain, turned herself in to police Thursday morning, according to a Gwinnett County Police Department press release.

She has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, a misdemeanor, and a turn lane violation (driving more than 300 feet in the center turn lane).

Rainy weather and low light are considered to be contributing factors, police said.  However, speed and alcohol are not considered contributing factors at this time.

Dakota Waters, 17, of Lawrenceville, was killed in the Wednesday morning accident. He was trying to cross Lawrenceville Highway when he was struck.

Police said Thursday that they do not have information on Waters' status as a student or his intended direction.

Yesterday morning I filmed on my iPhone dozens of cars jumping into the middle turn lane on Lawrenceville Highway at least a 1/4 mile from the intersection with Mountain Industrial (in the dark, in the rain). By the time, I made it to the actual left turn lane, there was a line of cars well up the middle lane - and they were blowing at me for trying to make a legal merge into the left turn lane! I am sick of rude and thoughtless drivers who think their time is more important than everyone elses. It happens at this intersection, it happens at the Hugh Howell ramp to 78 (cars will run each other off the road trying to be the first on to the freeway), it happens on 78 at the split for Scott Blvd and North Druid Hills Rd- cars will blow past the backed up traffic heading to Scott Blvd in the NDH Rd exit lanes and then cut over at the last minute. Basic decency and respect should cause these people to rethink their actions - but as we saw on Wednesday, a young life was taken thanks to a society that supports the 'ol "do what ever feels right or pleases you - and to hell with everyone else" mentality. IF, and only IF she indeed was zooming down the middle lane to save the headache of traffic (in essence telling all of us to go screw ourselves because she is more important), then she needs the full extent of punishment there is!! Come on people - please hold each other accountable for being respectful!
