Family of 1-Year-Old Killed In Lenora Park Speak Out

In light of charges filed against the driver, a spokesman for the family of the 1-year-old who died after being struck by a car in Lenora Park Sept. 17 released a statement.

Following Thursday's arrest and charges filed against the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 1-year-old child from Grayson Sept. 18, a spokesperson for the child's parents released a statement.

"The reckless actions of the driver caused this accident and the parents of Olivia are relieved that the police investigation has now confirmed this fact and resulted in charges being brought against the driver,” the release read. 

According to Gwinnett County Police Department, the investigation revealed sufficient probable cause to charge the driver with improper backing and second degree vehicular homicide (misdemeanor).

“The driver, 30 year Tekila Glass of Riverdale, Georgia, was arrested after turning herself in at the Gwinnett County Jail,” GCPD spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said in a press release. “She was released after posting bond. At this time it is believed that Ms. Glass is primarily at fault for this accident.”

Ritter said there are no other charges pending at this time, but the investigation is ongoing. Investigators continue to ask anyone who witnessed this accident and has not spoken with investigators to call the Accident Investigation Unit at 770-338-5675.

According to the statement, the Hellwig family would have no further comment about the ongoing criminal investigation, charges against the driver or any other matters relating to the accident. However, they did want to express their appreciation for the support they had received from the community.

“The Hellwig Family appreciates very much all of the prayers, cards, and other support that so many people have extended to them during this most difficult time,” the statement continued. “Brooke and Brad Hellwig will need the continued support of family members and friends for a considerable period of time as they continue to grieve the devastating loss of their precious child.”
