(Updated) Fatality in JCB Accident

Three-car accident results in one death, two critical injuries.

A three-car collision has left one person dead and two others in critical condition, according to the Gwinnett County Fire Department. A detective said that accident investigators suspect alcohol played a role in the crash.

Emergency personnel responded to a call last night around 8:30 p.m. of a three-car auto accident with vehicle entrapment. The incident happened on Jimmy Carter Boulevard near Rockbridge Court in unincorporated Norcross, according to a news release.

Detective J.R. Flanagan of the Gwinnett County Police Department said that a car traveling eastbound on Jimmy Carter Boulevard swerved, crossing over the median and striking a car head-on. The driver of that car was deceased when emergency crews arrived at 8:32 p.m.

Flanagan said that the original vehicle flipped over crashing into a third car.

“Firefighters had to quickly use jaws to extricate two of the patients from the auto accident,” according to Eric Eberly of the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

"Alcohol is a suspected factor," said Flanagan. He said the Crime Investigation Unit is waiting for a toxicology report to come in.

The medic unit transported four victims to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. In addition to the woman who died on the scene, one female child had minor injuries and two adults, one male and one female, are in critical condition, according to the release.

Westbound traffic was shut down on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in both directions while the Accident Investigation Unit looked into the accident, according to Eberly.
