Update: Fire Causes Heavy Damage to Mountain Park Home

Owner heard a pop from the backyard, then saw the flames.

A Tuesday afternoon fire caused significant damage to a Mountain Park home, but resulted in no injuries, according to firefighters.

The fire occurred just after 1 p.m. in the 1400 block of Spring Valley Lane, just off of Rockbridge Road in the Gwinnett County portion of unincorporated Stone Mountain, according to Gwinnett Fire Lt. Eric Eberly in a media release.

The fire, which caused heavy damage to the exterior of the backside of the home and as well as to the attic and kitchen, was preceded by a small explosion of unknown origin.

Tommy Thompson, one of the homeowner's sons, wasn't sure either. He said it may have come from a gasoline can in the backyard. He heard the explosion from inside the house.

"I don't really know what happened. I just heard a pop," he said. "I looked out the back sliding glass doors and saw the flames."

Eberly said in the press release that firefighters listed the fire as an accident.

The initial report from Eberly stated: "Homeowner also reported that her son had been working in the backyard with a lawn mower; he left the machine running and then heard an explosion. When he returned he found the side of the home on fire."

Minor smoke and water damage was sustained elsewhere in the house.
