A Gwinnett police officer spotted the suspect and his vehicle in the area of Boggs Road and Duluth Highway in unincorporated Duluth. The suspect fled from the officer upon sight, and the officer pursued the suspect.

Due to the dangerous conditions of the pursuit, police officers backed off the chase and lost sight of the suspect momentarily. Edwards reportedly continued to the parking lot of the Kroger at the intersection of Old Norcross Road and Steve Reynolds Boulevard where he carjacked a vehicle from an innocent victim, police said.

Officers located Edwards as he was exiting the Kroger parking onto Steve Reynolds Boulevard. Officers continued to pursue him when he stopped the vehicle near Satellite Boulevard. The suspect exited his vehicle and was confronted by pursuing officers. Gunfire erupted between Edwards and officers, and the suspect was shot during the exchange of gunfire, police said. Edwards was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment where he later died.

No officers were injured. The victim of the carjacking received treatment for minor injuries and is expected to be okay.
