Get to Know: Lilburn Capt. Ben Haynes

Lilburn PD's support commander is down to Earth: "Just call me Ben."

Capt. Ben Haynes, who was hired as Lilburn Police Department’s new support commander last month, will serve many roles for the city.

He’ll oversee the department’s criminal investigations. He’ll manage the traffic unit, dispatch, records and internal affairs. He’ll also be the department’s public information officer.

But after the 35-year-old met with the department’s officers for the first time after being hired in mid-May he made sure one thing was perfectly clear:

“Just call me Ben,” he said recently from his new office in the Calvin Fitchett Municipal Complex in Old Town. “They don’t have to call me Captain. I’m down to Earth. What you see is what you get.”

What Lilburn gets is a father of two who most recently had been a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in its Atlanta Regional Office in Conyers, where he was the senior agent.

Capt. Haynes was with the GBI for 12 years.

He fills the vacant position left by Bruce Hedley, who was sworn in as Chief of Police in April.

“Ben brings a wealth of experience to the table after serving over a decade with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation,” Chief Hedley said. “His many years of experience working and solving complex criminal investigations will serve Ben well in his new position as our support commander.

“I am very proud to have a man of Ben’s caliber join our team.”

Haynes, a Dacula resident, he said he looks forward to the opportunity to learn new skills in his first fulltime management position and to continue the department’s reputation as crime-solvers.

He also looks forward to what should be a consistently commute to work.

“This is a great opportunity to be closer to home. I’ll have more time to spend with my family,” he said,. “Dacula to Conyers; that was a killer.”
