Smith said in a Thursday morning press conference that it was unclear how the family knew Cardenas-Rico. "The exact nature of their relationship is unknown at this time," Smith said.

Police say the homicides occurred around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Bridle Path Drive in the Huntington Falls subdivision near Scenic Highway and Sugarloaf Parkway.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Elvis Garcia outside the home suffering from multiple stab wounds.

The children were all found in the finished basement of the home.
