Inside Police Reports: Cops Find Pot, Hash, Pills During Traffic Stop

Gwinnett County Police arrested a Gainesville man on drug charges after a traffic stop last week.

After pulling over Thomas M. Hensley for failure to yield, police found 3.27 pounds of pot, an ounce and half of hashish and 2,000 Xanax pills. He faces charges of possession with intent to distribute.

According to the incident report provided by GCPD, an officer began following the driver in his 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser near the intersection of Stone Drive and Rockbridge Road on July 15 because he was driving erratically. He was followed on Stone Mountain Highway, Lake Lucerne Road and Five Forks-Trickum Road.

The driver was pulled over after he turned left on Tom Smith Road, narrowly missing an oncoming car travelling south on Five Forks-Trickum Road, forcing the driver to slam on the brakes.

In the incident report, the reporting officer wrote that he pulled over the Land Cruiser on Tom Smith Road near Wentworth Lane, then “immediately I could smell raw marijuana coming from the vehicle."

The driver said he did not know where the odor came from and that he did not smoke marijuana. But a search of the car found a black back pack that contained 44 grams of hashish and three sealed food-storage bags with about a pound of marijuana in each (all later tested possible as hash and marijuana).

“I went back to the offender and showed him the three bags and he stated , ‘I guess I’m in trouble now,’” the reporting officer wrote.

The driver said there was nothing else in the truck, but a brown box sealed with packing tape was found containing 2,000 Xanax pills, according to police. The driver said he had a prescription for Xanax, but not for that quantity.

He said all of the drugs found were for his personal use.

The driver was cited for failure to yield along with the other charges.

He was taken to the county jail and bailed out the next day.
