Inside the Police Reports: Child Hit With Cord, Mother Hit With Jail Time

A wallet theft turns into a family squabble, and mom ends up in handcuffs.

On Aug. 18, about 6:40 p.m., Gwinnett County Police Department responded to Westbury Springs Apartments (the 4800 block of Burns Road) in reference to the theft of a wallet.

Officers were alerted that the mother of the child (an area middle school student) accused of taken said wallet had "whipped" the child, as well. And, that the child ran off after the complainants came to her mothers home.

Once officers found the child, they noticed "a welt in the shape of a horse shoe on her right wrist and another welt with the same pattern on her left arm." The officer determined the welts came from an electrical cord.

Once the theft issue was resolved, officers focused on the apparent injuries of the child, who told police that her mother spanked her. Asked what her mother hit her with and what it looked like, the child responded: "It looked like the kind you plug into a wall."

According to the report, it was one of those multicolored extension cords.

The child said she was hit twice in the arms and on her back. In addition, the child said her mother "grabbed her by the shirt and pulled her out of the apartment." In the process, the child said she hit her head on the door frame of the apartment.

And, bam, the door was closed on her: That's the child's story.

The mother said she was angered when she heard about the stolen wallet, and told police she'd been having problems with her taking things that didn't belong to he and lying about it.

This time, according to the report, she spanked the child on the backside one time. Police said the mom also said that she picked up an extension cord (one plugged in under a television) and hit the child two times on the arms.

That's the mom's story.

A witness told police that it was a charger cord that the mother picked up and hit the child on the eye with. That witness said the child also hit her head on the door frame and fell to the ground.

The witness said the mom then yelled: "That's the girl who took your money and wallet. Ask her to give you your money back." Directed at the child, the witness then said the mother screamed "leave and never come back."

The child then took off in a run, according to the witness account.

That's someone else's story.

Well, no matter who's version was exactly right, police decided the mom was headed to jail for family violence battery. They placed her in handcuffs and transported her to Gwinnett County Jail.

Police released the child in the custody of her grandmother.

The mom is no longer in jail, released on $5,700 bond, according to detention center information.
