Lilburn Man Sentenced in Ala. Vehicular Homicide Case

A Lilburn man was sentenced to one year in jail, two years of probation and fined $2,000 for his involvement in a fatal car wreck in Alabama in 2010.

According to a report in the Athens, Ala., News Courier, Feliciano Diaz-Perez, 24, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide Monday in a Limestone County courtroom for the death of Edna Barker Harris, 59, of Decatur, Ala.

Prosecutors said Diaz-Perez was tired and inattentive when the early morning wreck occurred on U.S Highway 72 on Jan. 28, 2010. They said he was eating and adjusting music on his smartphone when he ran a red light, and collided with the vehicle Harris was driving. He was on his way from the Atlanta area to Madison, Ala., to work on a construction job, the newspaper reported.

As part of the plea agreement, Diaz-Perez, who also was order to pay court costs, will serve one year in the Limestone County jail, according to the newspaper account.
