Man Drives For Help After Being Shot in Head; Suspect Arrested

Xavier Lawrence Dozier-Joubert was shot by a burglar in the Norcross area, who stole his phone. He drove in his car to a friend's house on Pirkle Road to get help.

A 19-year-old man answered his doorbell late Wednesday evening in the Oakbrook Pointe Apartment Homes and was shot in the face by a burglar. After falling unconscious briefly, he was able to drive himself to a friend's house in his car, according to Gwinnett Police.

Xavier Lawrence Dozier-Joubert was taken to the hospital after 1 a.m. in “critical but stable” condition, says Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department. Police now have a suspect, Paul Reshaud Tolbert, in custody in connection with the shooting and robbery. 

After sustaining the gunshot wound and coming to, the man noticed that his phone had been stolen along with his Xbox. Because he could not make any calls, he got into his car and drove to a friend’s place about five minutes away off Pirkle Road, said Smith.

An ambulance was called to the scene at 1 a.m. but detectives don’t know what time the shooting occurred since none of the neighbors reported it.

Tolbert is being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Detectives said they were able to interview Dozier at the hospital, leading them to the suspect, who also lives in the Oakbrook Pointe apartments.
