News Nearby: Man Killed, Officer Wounded During Burglary Call

Police say report of a stabbing victim nearby is connected

A man was shot and killed and a police officer was wounded Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4, during a shootout at a Lawrenceville-area home, minutes after police responded to a stabbing report just three blocks away.

Police say the two events are connected.

According to Gwinnett Police, officers responded to a person-stabbed call at 3668 Willow Wood Way at 4:06 p.m. Saturday. But when they arrived there was no victim or suspect there.

Officers then received a burglary-in-progress call at 4:10 p.m. at 3849 Smokemist Trace, located approximately three blocks away and just north of Lilburn.

Shots were fired after officers entered the second residence. “As a result, one male died and one officer was shot in the leg,” according to a Gwinnett Police media alert.

Later, the stabbing victim returned to the Willow Wood Way residence, and was taken to the hospital in serious condition. His condition was later upgraded to stable.

Detectives confirmed the cases were related, according to the press release.

The suspect attended a party at 3668 Willow Wood Way, where the victim was reportedly stabbed. The suspect fled to the second address.

From the Gwinnett Police report:

“When two responding officers arrived at 3849 Smokemist Trace, they noticed that the front door was kicked in. When they began checking the residence, they encountered the suspect. At some point, shots were fired.”

Police were not releasing the identity of the man killed.
