Pit Bull Dies in Lilburn House Fire

Another dog is missing after a residential fire broke out on Martin Nash Road over the Memorial Day weekend.

A dog died and another one is missing after a fire broke out at a Lilburn home over the Memorial Day weekend.

According to Gwinnett County Fire spokesman Lt. Colin S. Rhoden, firefighters found one of the dogs deceased in the home off the 1400 block of Martin Nash Road and were unable to locate the second pet. One dog was a pit bill and the other was a pit bull mix.

The homeowner called in the fire around 11:53 p.m. Sunday (May 26) and told authorities that the three adults and a third dog living there were able to evacuate safely with no injuries. The residents have been displaced due to the heavy fire damage, however, and Red Cross will be assisting them.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 11:57 p.m. to find the front of the home fully involved in heavy smoke and flames, said Rhoden.

Hose lines were used to fight the fire, which was under control at 12:19 a.m. The bedroom toward the front of the home was heavily damaged, and the rest of the residence has smoke and fire damage.

As of 2:30 a.m. Monday, the cause of the fire is undetermined.

What alerted the residents to the fire was their smoke alarms, said one of the victims. In the news release, Rhoden reminded that Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services encourages residents to maintain smoke alarms in their homes. A smoke alarm should be placed on each level of the house and outside of the sleeping quarters, he added. Batteries should be change twice a year, either during Daylight Saving Time or anytime the unit gives a low battery alert.
