Police: Hospitalized Driver Who Caused Fatal Wreck Will Face Charges

Police say Everard Nelson, 52, is responsible for the wreck that killed Alandis Spells, 35, of Decatur.

Gwinnett Police will charge a Lawrenceville man with vehicular homicide, stemming from a fatal Saturday night accident on Lawrenceville Suwanee Road.

Police say Everard Nelson, 52, is responsible for the wreck that killed Alandis Spells, 35, of Decatur. Nelson is hospitalized with serious injuries from the wreck.

Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl. Ed Ritter said in an emailed media alert that once Nelson is discharged, he will be charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, improper lane change and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Police say Nelson was fleeing the scene of a minor accident at Lawrencevile Suwanee Road and Dean Road around 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1. He drove southbound on Lawrenceville Suwanee Road at a “high rate of speed," tried to pass slower traffic through the grass media and lost control, crossing into northbound traffic.

He struck Spells’ vehicle, sending it into a house and causing a gas leak.
